An ex-war correspondent has been charged with assault after a dispute over a cab ride, a court has heard.

Michael Joseph Ware, 42, of Ferny Grove, faced the Brisbane Magistrate's Court accused of a common assault on Gipps St in Fortitude Valley on November 26 last year.

Ware - a former reporter with The Courier-Mail - worked in Afghanistan and Iraq for Time magazine and CNN.

Senior Sergeant Mark Gorton said the case was an appropriate one for mediation, but that the process had been delayed because of a difficulty in contacting the complainant who is an Indian national.

He said Ware had upcoming commitments overseas and asked for the case to be adjourned for two months.

He will reappear on April 18.

It's unlikely that he will be discussing this in public prior to the resolution of the case, but since the police think this is something that can be dealt with in mediation rather than court, it doesn't sound like too big a deal. I guess this is his "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" moment!
